Broccoli to fight breast cancer

Broccoli to fight breast cancer

Relatively short time ago broccoli was highlighted as a composite of great value to combat lung cancer. However, beyond this type of cancer Broccoli is apparently able to attack the heart of the disease in another of its manifestations: breast cancer.

Researchers at the University of Michigan led by Dr Sun Duxin have studied the reactions of mice with breast cancer before a compound in broccoli called sulforaphane, which has been attributed the ability to stop the cancer and kill cancer cells.

To the action of sulforaphane researchers found that mice did not develop tumors and cancer inhibiting their growth. But more interesting is that sulforaphane also led to kill cancer stem cells, thus ensuring that cancer does not return.

"The sulforaphane-highlights" Sun has been previously studied for its effects on cancer, but this study shows that the benefit lies in inhibiting the growth of cancer stem cells. This new approach suggests the potential of sulforaphane or broccoli extract to prevent or treat cancer through the localization of critical cancer cells.

What is interesting about all this? Conventional treatment of chemotherapy focuses on curbing the action of cancer, but not to go to the root of the problem by killing cancer cells, as cancer often recurs in patients after they underwent chemotherapy. Integrating sulforaphane in these cancer treatments, it may be possible to ensure that the disease does not return.
